Jam Lisbon
Where we designed both the architecture and the interiors, Jam Hotel Lisbon emerges from the full retrofit of a former office block on the banks of the Tagus. The building is transformed into a living showcase of circularity, craft, and modular design. We adopted a strategy of sourcing all craft and materials from within a 100 kilometre radius, working with local ateliers, artisans, and design collectives. The interiors are eclectic and handcrafted, with modular systems that allow disassembly and reuse. Lamps are made from recycled bricks salvaged from local construction sites, bunk beds are built with wood from forests rescued after fire, and headboards are made from eco tiles produced out of recycled shoe soles. We curated a network of designers and makers including Emmanuel Babled, Jisamwe collective, Ivan Daniel Cova, Alexander Mignot, Mircea Anghel of Cabana Studio, and Pieter Van Bruysse. The fixed furniture, lighting, and surfaces are crafted in dialogue with these collaborators rather than sourced off the shelf. Concrete, terracotta, cork, locally recycled materials, and raw textures keep the industrial character of the original structure at play. The rooftop lounge bar, with its elongated pool, terracotta tiles, hand woven furniture, ceramic masks, and modular tables, becomes a social hub that bridges design, craft, and hospitality. Jam Lisbon is also poised as Portugal’s first passive hotel. We oriented architecture and systems to drastically reduce energy consumption through insulation, solar panels, passive recovery systems, and local material reuse. The result is a hotel that is raw but deeply considered, a place where structure, craft, and story coexist. It is a frame built by us, in which the city, the materials, the local makers, and the guests’ own lives converge.
