Royale Belge
MIX began in a monumental 1969 modernist building, once home to Royale Belge. Its walls are rigid, powerful, monumental. We did not seek to erase its history. We chose to enter into dialogue with it, to invite others into the story. Over fifty artists and designers, many from Zaventem Ateliers, joined not to decorate, but to participate, to become part of the building’s unfolding life. From the first sketch, MIX was never just a hotel. It is a living organism: a hotel, a food market, a restaurant hub, a coworking space, a cultural forum, built with care, layered by dozens of hands. Every object, from a brass coat hook cast by Fonderie Woit to a 157-meter concrete bar sculpted by Bram Vanderbeke, carries the weight of conversation, craft, and intent. There are no mood boards. No repetition to create cohesion. Tension, contrast, and individual expression guide the space. Perfection is irrelevant. Presence is everything. This approach extends the philosophy of our studio. MIX is a platform for shared making, a reimagined guild where designers, craftspeople, and artists work side by side, exchanging skills, tools, and ideas. The line between solo and collective is intentionally blurred.
